Meet Our Coaches

Our coaches are experienced certified CrossFit trainers who are passionate about CrossFit, health, fitness, and the success of our athletes. Our coach’s top priority is to keep members safe, help them stay motivated, and support them in their journey to getting stronger and healthier.  They will be readily available to assist with movement modification to accommodate your current skill level, provide coaching cues to ensure proper technique and safety, and provide positive encouragement throughout the workout.  Join in on a class and see for yourself how great our coaches are!

 

Austin Newman

Co-Owner/ Head Coach

Austin grew up around the corner from the box in the Travis Country neighborhood and graduated from Austin High. He brings a breadth of knowledge, enthusiasm and passion to the box. Austin is constantly seeking out new ways to improve his knowledge and expertise as a fitness coach in order to provide an excellent training environment for members. Austin grew up playing various sports. He played collegiate soccer at Austin College and continues to play recreationally. Austin is dedicated to helping create a CrossFit community that breeds success for our members. He has the following certifications: CrossFit Level 1, Endurance and Mobility Certified, USAW, ACSM CPT, CPR and AED certified

Becky Newman

Co-Owner

Becky has always been active from a young age playing every sport imaginable.  She decided to stick with soccer through her collegiate years where she earned All-American accolades her junior and senior years.  After college, Becky was introduced to CrossFit by her (then) boyfriend. They started their CrossFit journey in Austin’s garage during 2011.  They taught themselves Olympic lifting (looking back, probably not well) and thrived on the friendly competitive nature of the sport.  This was something they were missing greatly from their competitive, sport-filled lives thus far. Becky is not currently coaching classes, but that doesn’t keep her from staying active in the CrossFit Oak Hill community! She is a full-time Speech-Language Pathologist working in a hospital. In her free time, Becky’s favorite activity is hiking in the greenbelt with Austin, Evan (her son) and their three fur babies.

Chris Simmons

Coach

Chris is a Certified Crossfit Level 1 Instructor with over 3 years of Crossfit experience and over 7 years working in the fitness industry.  He has been a lifelong athlete competing in numerous sports from football, power lifting to triathlons and even playing collegiate baseball for Ouachita Baptist University.

After finishing his “athletic” career, Chris bounced around trying to fill his competitive spirit while still trying to stay active.   In early 2010 he was introduced to the sport of Crossfit and has never looked back.  He knew he had discovered the sport that would enhance his training and allow him to be a part of something that would bring people together working towards the common goal of fitness and healthy living.

William Thornton
Coach

William was a very active kid growing up. He played numerous sports throughout his childhood. After high school he pursued a career in the military.  While overseas he was convinced by a friend to try a workout named “Fran.” After that he was hooked and knew CrossFit was the fitness program for him.  William went on to attain his CrossFit Level One trainer certificate as well as his Crossfit Weightlifting Trainer certificate.  He began coaching in November 2014 at a box in Houston. Currently, William is pursuing a degree in Kinesiology at The University of Texas.  William is a firm believer in the power of fitness and community and is excited to continue his coaching career at CrossFit Oak Hill.

Elwyn Hutter

Coach

At 32 Elwyn was diagnosed with Colon Cancer about 6 weeks after him and his wife found out they would become parents. Once He made it through that challenge, he started to pay more attention to his overall fitness, but just couldn’t find a program that worked. He tried running – too boring for him to do every day. Cycling – too much of a time investment. Gym membership – solitary and without real challenge. Jiu Jitsu – just didn’t take. He needed to find something that would keep him moving forward; where the workouts were always fresh and challenging and where he could build total body fitness. Most of all, Elwyn was looking for something that would keep him healthy.

Enter Crossfit. Elwyn started Crossfit in 2011 and immediately felt the hook. The variety of workouts, incorporating weightlifting, gymnastics, running and rowing left him, for the first time, feeling strong. Since starting Crossfit he has accomplished tasks he never thought possible; half marathons, heavy lifts, fitness competitions and an almost daily sense of having accomplished something to be proud of.

As a certified Level 2 Crossfit Trainer, Elwyn’s single goal is to help others of all ages, shapes and sizes come to the same realization that he did – life is better when you are feeling fit and strong. He believes that everyone is capable of smashing personal goals and records and that the community and camaraderie that Crossfit and group fitness classes foster are a critical ingredient to doing just that.  Prior to moving to Austin in 2016, Elwyn was owner and Head Coach of CrossFit Ossining in suburban New York.  In that capacity he had the pleasure of understanding just what a strong community can be created in a CrossFit Affiliate.
